Honest comparison · updated July 2026

Smith.ai vs. Rocketship:
they meter your calls. We go get your customers.

Smith.ai answers your phone and bills you per call, so the month your marketing finally works is the month the invoice spikes. That is the whole product: it waits for a phone you made ring some other way. Rocketship runs the acquisition loop that makes it ring — finds your buyers, emails them from your own Gmail, answers the replies unsupervised, books the meetings, answers your phone 24/7 on your own number, and builds the site where the caller pays. Flat published plans, $0 to $149, bought with a card, live in minutes.

Disclosure: Rocketship publishes this page, so we are the competitor here. Pricing figures come from Smith.ai's published plans and independent pricing guides as of mid-2026 — verify current rates at smith.ai before deciding.

The cost math

Smith.ai's human plans start around $292.50 a month for 30 calls, with overages around $9.75–11 per call after that. Now run the month you are actually paying for: the campaign lands, the phone rings 100 times, and independent pricing guides put the bill past $1,000. Read that back. The meter runs fastest in exactly the month your marketing works. Per-call billing is a tax on success, and collecting it is Smith.ai's business — the busier you get, the more they make. A published flat price cannot do that to you: a Rocketship plan sized for that same 30-call month is $84–154 all-in, and it is the same number when the month goes ten times better.

The floor under the meter is payroll. Humans answer those calls, humans are paid salaries, and salaries have to come out of a per-call rate — which is why the human plan works out near $10 a call and can never work out near ten cents. Even Smith.ai's AI tier keeps the meter: roughly $95 a month for roughly 50–60 calls. A smaller meter is still a meter, because the meter is the business model, and a business model does not come out in a software update.

And look at what the meter never bought you. Not one of those dollars found a buyer, sent an email, answered a reply, made an outbound call, built the page where the caller pays, or held a pipeline. Smith.ai starts when the phone rings and stops when the call ends — everything that made it ring, and everything that turns the caller into revenue, you are buying somewhere else. Rocketship's flat subscription runs the whole loop: buyers found and emailed from your own Gmail, replies answered unsupervised and booked by Claire, the phone answered 24/7 by Sophie on your own number, the site with Stripe payments, the quote with e-signature. $292.50 buys a month of answering. $24.99 buys acquisition.

The test you can run this month

Sign up for both — each takes a card. Run them for a month, then compare two numbers: what each one billed you, and how many customers each one produced. Their invoice counts calls; ours reads the same flat number it showed you on the pricing page, next to the emails sent, replies answered, meetings booked, and payments taken. Keep the one that produced a customer.

When Rocketship is the right choice

  • Your bill should not grow because your marketing worked. Rocketship's plans are flat — $0, $24.99, $79, $149, published — the same number in your best month as your slowest, with a minutes pack you price from the pricing page instead of an overage you discover on the invoice.
  • You want the calls to exist in the first place. An answering service starts when the phone rings; Rocketship finds the buyers, sends the outbound from your own Gmail, answers the replies unsupervised, and books the meetings that make it ring.
  • You want the phone answered at 2am on your own number by something that books the meeting on the call and drops the caller into a CRM with notes — not a summary in your inbox to follow up on yourself.
  • You want to edit what the AI says yourself, in minutes, from your settings page — trained on your actual website, answering only what you approved — not briefed to a team and revised through support.
  • You want the site the campaign points at, the Stripe checkout on it, and the quote with e-signature that closes the deal from the same subscription that answered the phone — not four vendors with you as the glue.

The comparison that settles it: a phone call.
